With peons and backups out of the way, Morrison’s ready to get fitted for the real heavy metal.

Corner Stone Pieces

FCBD Iron Man

Class– Primary/Secondary Attacker

You might point out that he does not have Armor keyword. But dear reader, each of the other figures with the same sculpt have Armor, as do the other Iron Man figures with Scientist, Avengers, S.H.E.I.L.D., which this guy has. [So there! — Editor RKJS]

For a while, this guy, SI Spidey, and Namor were my go-to Avengers team. This guy excels especially in low point games where you might not face Outwit, but will face high-ish damage. That makes his “Invincible” SP stand out. After a couple of shots he’ll go down fast, but with a 10 range, copyable S.H.I.E.L.D. TA, and Running Shot, you should be able to stay decently away from the fighting. That 11 attack can go a long way.

(On the theme of considering his lack of Armor keyword, if several Colossus pieces can have Armor, then this guy and August General in Iron should have the keyword as well.)

_________________________

Box

Class – secondary attacker, support

Box isn’t the best by any stretch, but he was an early favorite figure of mine (my usual team back then was Box, Hood, and Rampaging Hulk). He suffers from Alpha Flight syndrome (low attack for the points). But with natural 3 damage, and 18 defense, you only really ever need his opening Perplex to boost his attack or reduce opposing defense. His giant SP can be potentially useful. His consistent damage reducers and innate nanobots SP keep him in the game longer.

_________________________

Annihilus

Class– Corner Stone

Psychic Blast, Running Shot, 10 range, and 4 damage for a good figure does make. Mid-dial Regeneration could profoundly help you, especially if he has Automatic Regeneration, but the Running Shot + Pulse Wave combo might be even better if you are positioned correctly.

_________________________

AV Spider-Man

Class – secondary Attacker

This Spider-Man is quite possibly one of the best secondary attackers in the game. His first click is certainly formidable, with 11 attack with Super Strength and Outwit. But it’s the second and third clicks that especially stand out. With double targets his “Webbing” SP impedes your opponent tremendously. Shape Change also comes in handy in lieu of the later WOS Spidey’s Super – Duper senses.

_________________________

Iron Widow

Class– Corner Stone

This dial has three distinct phases: three first 3 clicks (aggressive attack), middle 2 (Outwitting sniper), and the final 2 (penetrating sniper). 4 clicks of Mastermind may not seem useful, but as good as those clicks are, it is a wise investment to protect these clicks (see the first section). Make full use of her Ultimates TA. For feats, consider Contingency Plan, as late dial stat-boosting will certainly come in handy.

_________________________

E & V War Machine

HoT War Machine

Class – Primary Attacker/Cornerstone

Considering the age of 2 of these 3 pieces, all are phenomenal. The experienced Armor Wars version  is a solid investment for slightly more than 1/3 of a conventional build total. EE and 8 double target range makes the Vet the perfect piece to push and heal with Recharge. For 13 pts more, the FCBD War Machine brings three clicks of natural 4 damage, for s total of 5 clicks capable of dealing more than 3 damage. The reason these figures are so affordably priced is that their defensive numbers are somewhat low, but each flouts near dials full of damage reducers. These low point values ensure that Rhodes will have friends to draw fire and support. Truly stellar pieces.

OK, there’s the mid-range suits of Armor settled with. Thursday, Morrison assesses the top-of-the-line of metallic face-kicking fashion.

Hello, Heroclixin’ readers!

I’m sort of bailing on the Top Ten week of articles for March. I have one all ready to go, but really wanted to save it as an evergreen. Conversely, I felt it was way too soon to do a Top Ten of Giant-Size X-Men. Look for that one after Easter.

Fortunately, I have some friends. :) Say hi to Morrison, a skilled young player who, inspired by myself and other Heroclix writer/reviewer, decided to pen an exhaustive review of  the Armor keyword. he wasn’t able to post it on HCRealms like he hoped, so he offered it to me. I gladly accepted. I love to see the young do ambitious things.

Let’s suit up!

Morrison’s Best of Armor Review

Hello HCRealms, this is ThatGuyoverthere. I was inspired by Saturnflight’s series of best of articles, so I thought I would try to do something similar. Between the units section and my personal memories (I got into heroclix around the tail-end of the Avengers expansion). I hope you enjoy my review of a generic keyword.

Support/Lowpoint filler

Stingray

Class: Peon

For 30 pts you get a highly mobile (dolphin speed and leap/climb) figure who gets free movement. Also you get 6 range, a 9 attack, 5 clicks, and two clicks of 18 defense at range. At a trim 29 pts, Stingray brings a lot to the table and is a great for Avengers and Scientist theme teams.

_________________________

E & V Beetle

Class: support, tertiary attacker

Beetle is going to be a tough sell, but he does have some benefits. Both pieces are decently mobile with 9 speed running shot. Both have decently useful team abilities for either other characters (the Vet’s Sinister Syndicate) or to push repeatedly (via the Exp’s Masters of Evil) to his primary use: Probability Control. Few Armor characters have probcontrol, and this is certainly the cheapest you’re going to get (the only other figures with Armor and prob are various 150+pts Dr. Dooms and Monarch).

In short, for 60-80 pts, you get a figure that could be used as a first strike then to be relegated to mastermind fodder to get to your prob.

_________________________

Guardsman

Class – Mobile blocking terrain/peon

At around 30 pts, 5 clicks, 4 with Toughness, is a pretty deep dial. With 6 range, flight, and decent movement, you can be pretty annoying with this figure by blocking line of fire. Once again, very good mastermind fodder. With S.H.I.E.L.D. TA, keep him near your main attacker to pump range or damage as needed.

_________________________

Doombot 3095

Doombot 5953

Sooo generic I almost didn’t add a pic.

Class – Peon and Useful Peon respectively

At 30 pts, wildcard + Willpower = tie-up piece. He is also decent as Mastermind fodder and can shoot if necessary.

At 40 pts however, you get a very good support piece. He has 8 range and Energy Explosion, which can annoy opponents unfamiliar with this unassuming package. Toughness extends the dial some. But the coup de grace is his Enhancement, which makes him a suberp support piece for bigger hitters. If you land on his last click, you should use this bot either as blocking terrain or MM fodder; he can’t really be good for anything else then. Minions of Doom helps your larger investments become more cost effective.

_________________________

R Mandroid Armor

Class – support

And finally: Mandroid Armor. While certainly a sufferer of early dial syndrome, he offers two things: S.H.I.E.L.D. TA, which is always useful, and INCREDIBLY cheap TK. With the full REV+LE having only 1 click of TK each, stick with this guy: cheap is what you want here.

Tomorrow, we’ll see what Morrison has to say about Secondary Attackers in the Armor wars. Check him out!

Wrapping up our Black History Month-themed countdown of the Top Ten Black Characters in ‘Clix with the #2 piece:

Gotham City Detective (#006 Arkham Asylum)

Cheap Enhancement is always good, and this is the best value for the power  thanks in part to the PD Team Ability allowing him to also boost his Enhanced partner’s chances of hitting as long as he can see the target, too. Starting 9 AV is good for the 27-point cost.

Push GCD a bit to gain Plasticity to be one mother of a tie-up piece with Willpower, or stay put to keep Enhancing shooters while throwing out a ranged attack himself.

So many roles almost make this mere generic the best black piece in the game.

And the #1 Black fig is:

Bronze Tiger (#032 Justice League)

He’s got the Charge and 11 AV to move in for immediate attack; he’s got the DV to survive the counterattack and the Willpower to push to deal extra damage with Close Combat Expert; he’s got self-healing potential with his Suicide Squade TA and the ability to hide from shooters with the League of Assassins ATA (thus addressing his lone weakness against ranged attacks. Lunge and/or Loner are two feats that make him a lot better for minimal extra cost.

For just 60 points, Bronze Tiger is one of the better characters in the game. And so he takes Heroclixin’s top spot among the best Black Characters in ‘Clix.

Hope you enjoyed this month’s Top Ten countdown. Be here Monday for another Custom Mod. Until then, happy heroclixin’ this weekend!

#4 is the Mr. Hammer-Time himself…

V Steel (#069 Origin)

I reviewed this piece way back in 2007, and am basically just quoting from that review. 10 range is GREAT for sniping until he can Charge for big damage with Super Strength. (Lunge is his feat, to get extra reach on that move.)

Then, don’t be afraid to push for a Close Combat Expert KO, because his AV spikes from a starting 10 to 11 and never sinks below 9. His damage is also excellent throughout, and his defense spikes to 17 TWICE down the length of his nine clicks, even if his reducers quit after only seven. Ending with Outwit and 4 damage can be a rude shock for opponents.

Great stats and virtually no wasted points makes for an affordable tentpole for 300-point games.

#3 is the similarly-armored

War Machine (#200 Hammer of Thor)

Compared to Vet Steel, War Machine almost seems a bit of a downgrade, with less life and less powers — especially in the close-combat department.

But he gains top-dial Running Shot and a second target to go with his 10 range while also maintaining 3+ natural damage for most of his dial. And, to make matters worse for enemies, he gets an AV spike to 11 with Penetrating/Psychic Blast in mid-life as well.

If War Machine has a weakness, it’s that he’s not quite so dangerous in close quarters. But again, his base damage is almost always high enough to take on any comers. Definitely worthy of the #3 spot on the Black list!

Finally, be here tomorrow to behold the best of the Black!!

is the oldest figure on the list yet…

Fatality (#053 Cosmic Justice)

With TK, she offers mobility for the team. With RCE, she offers big damage. At 68 points, you can’t beat that. The pricey Trick Shot or Elite Sniper feats might pump her cost too high, but with the right shields and/or tie-up, hey, why not use ’em?

Like most older figures, her DV is pretty sad (even with Super Senses) and her late dial stinks. But she’s still one of the most solid black characters in HeroClix.

#5 brings us a tie between

Nick Fury (#091 Sinister / #2-11 Classics)

and

Storm (#057 Mutations and Monsters)

Fury is pushable for sure, with the ability to do a fair amount of hurt for relatively few points. All that Stealth up front helps keep him safe, and his fine attack stats and powers (Psychic Blast, Willpower AND Outwit) make him a serious threat. But his end half isn’t nearly as threatening as the front, and pushing him to click #2 (because you will push him) takes him closer to that end, so he’s on the bottom half of the list.

Conversely, Storm is all about long-ranged power (especially on her second click). A slight weakness to being based is mitigated by her “Goddess” SP that grants Force Blast and Quake in addition to Energy Explosion and Smoke Cloud.  She’s a little high-priced to be so fragile, but she’s still worth every point.

On the home stretch, now. Be here tomorrow for #4 and #3 on the Black List! :)

The #8 piece is one of the first black heroes created:

Black Panther (#024 Avengers)

A dial chock-full of Leap/Climb and either Perplex or Outwit makes BP an excellent support piece. His starting 11 AV puts him among the elite fighters. It’s his wild card status, however, that makes him most versatile, allowing him to:

  • share that 11 AV with Batman Enemy/Sinister Syndicate TA users;
  • hide with Batman Allies;
  • peer at Stealthed targets with Superman Ally /Ultimates;
  • deter attacks with Mystics, and so on.

Costing nearly 100 points with no range or moving attack keeps the king of Wakanda out of the running for highly competitive figures. But on this list, he stacks fairly well. Add either Lunge or Pounce to give him some extra fighting oomph. Or play him as pure (if expensive) support and make him a Brilliant Tactician for Avengers, Fantastic Four, Ruler or Spider-Man Ally teammates.

#7 is that enforcer from the future:

Bishop (#014 Mutations & Monsters)

100 points gets you, initially, a strong ranged fighter with Running Shot and 19 DV from shooters. But you’re playing him to soon push him to Outwit.

The drawback, of course, is that he’ll suddenly become a prime target, and his 17 Toughness won’t protect him much from even light hits. But said light hit lands him on the potentially more dangerous RCE, while a big shot simply leads to still more Outwit.

His end-dial bearing Regen gives him both potential to come back to solid fighting shape and to serve as an X-Men team battery. It’s for all this utility, in addition to his strength as a secondary attacker, that he’s the #7 top Black character in ‘Clix.

Tomorrow we hit the midpoint!

As should be customary for Heroclixin’ in the future, each month I’m taking a week off from the usual features to do a Top Ten countdown. Last Friday I introduced this Top Ten Black Characters in HeroClix list (along with an honorable mention).

Here’s my #10:

Black Manta (#049 Arkham Asylum)

On the surface, he doesn’t look like much. But he’s got a SP granting Perplex for himself or other swimmers, so suddenly he can:

  • HSS-lite at a respectable 9 AV;
  • Psychic Blast a brick using either 11 AV or for 3 damage;
  • Increase his range to 7 squares, tagging that target who thought he was safe;
  • Protect himself with an 18 DV.

All for less than 70 points. His Injustice League TA isn’t very good, and his keywords stink, too. But he’s just good enough to make this Top Ten list for his way of slipping under the radar and doing way more hurt than he really ought to.

_________________________________

#9 is one my favorite HC pieces ever…

Veteran Mr. Terrific (#018 Legacy)

With a mediocre-at-best DV of 16 with Willpower and mere 2 damage, even his double-target Incap at 8 range with Outwit don’t look remotely worth 80 points.

But the “T” also stands for “team.” You have to use that JSA TA to shore up his DV. Then (since he’s Golden Age anyway) add the feat Protected, which is all but made for him (and highly character-accurate, representing his tricking enemies to hitting a T-Sphere-generated hologram double).

Now force your opponents into a devil’s choice: hit Terrific, activating Protected to push to becoming a Stealthed PCer, or leave him alone and let him keep Outwitting and Incapping just about every turn with Willpower.

Either way, you win, even if the worst happens and he falls, because they just spent at least three actions focusing on him instead of the bigger fighters he’s running interference for. “Fair Play” at its finest and enough to be the #9 top black HeroClix.

Come back tomorrow for #8 and #7!

I’m interrupting my usual weekly features to start a new regular monthly one — Top Ten Countdowns! (I had such a blast doing the various Top Tens of 2010 that I didn’t want to stop.)

It’s February, a.k.a. “Black History Month.” In its honor, I’m counting down the Top Ten Black Characters in Heroclix.

For the purposes of this countdown, here’s my definition of “black character”:

  1. A character of African descent.
  2. A character visually indistinguishable from such, regardless of origin.

In years past, I used to include Egyptians such as Asp in this category, simply because there weren’t many good Black characters to go around. And while I’ll still put M+M Apocalypse on my afro-teams, I no longer strictly count him. Similarly, I won’t be including Little Sure Shot; his sculpt is African, but the character is Native American.

Introductions are done. Who’s #10? Be here Monday to find that out. Until then, here’s the Honorable Mention foreshadowed by the art up top:

Captain America (#019 Secret Invasion)

At a svelte 49 points, black Cap here buys you a long dial of tie-up. Very similar to the barely-cheaper Guardian from Collateral Damage, he loses the older piece’s three clicks of Toughness for just one but gets much better numbers (especially in DV, though, in practice, they fare just about the same). A good filler for Soldier themes, too.

One of my favorite things to do in this game is pull out a F.U.N. (Friendly, Useful, Neat-o) team of clones. And with at least one version in the past 5 DC sets, Robin fits the need.

Robin 79 (Crisis veteran)

AKA: "Emo" Robin

The Outwit for this team, Emo Robin is crucial for getting past damage reducers. If necessary, he’s only one push away from Perplex, Willpower and Incap.

Robin 66 (Arkham Asylum)

My repaint.

While Crisis Robin supplies the Outwit, this version provides Perplex to start. Though it seems counterintuitive to use the high-cost figures for support, it’s absolutely worth it.

Robin (The Brave and the Bold)

"Lil'" Robin.

This is one of the front-line attackers. Totally built for close-fighting (as evidenced by  Combat Reflexes and 0 range), Lil’ Robin ties up the enemy for the others.

Robin (Crisis rookie)

Being a Robin without the Bat Ally TA, this one seems a weak link. But on a team this numerous, his Leadership can be key in the early game. And if you put Lunge on him, he suddenly becomes a dangerous puncher with a push or other light damage thanks to his Willpower and SP Flurry. He also draws attacks away from the others, being one of the non-Stealthed targets beyond his first click.

Robin (Batman Alpha)

Pretty long-lived for his cost, this Robin is made for Pounce and is, so equipped, the secret weapon of this team. Even without it, he’s good and consistent and will draw heat away from the really dangerous members of the team.

Robin 22 (Icons starter)

or, ol' Short Pants.

Only there to fill out points, toss an occasional Smoke Cloud and, most importantly, absorb themed team PC tokens. ‘Cause yeah…this is a themed team (Gotham City).

Here’s the team I built:

Robin 79 (Crisis veteran)
Robin 66 (Arkham Asylum)
Robin 43 (The Brave and the Bold) + Lunge 5
Robin 35 (Crisis rookie) + Lunge 5
Robin 30 (Batman Alpha) + Pounce 15
Robin 22 (Icons starter)

= 300 points (25 in feats). For a Modern Age version, I’ll drop the Icons piece and the feats for the 40-point Boy Wonder LE from Crisis:

Boy Wonder (Crisis LE)

This representation of the second and short-lived Robin Jason Todd can either be a Willpowered source of Smoke Cloud or join Damian Robin on the front lines with his Charge.

Look for a future New Comic Day battle report to, well, report on how this team fared. (But not this Wednesday…I have something different planned.) Happy clixing this weekend!

I’ve never done one of these lists before for this site (or on my previous one, Pojo.com). I tend to be a glass-half-full type who can find a solid use out of any piece.

But…y’know. Sometimes a piece is just bad. It might do something neat, but requires so much extra support or such situational serendipity that it might as well be wasted points.

Here we go, then…the worst of the mediocre.

______________________________________________

#10: Max Mercury (The Brave and the Bold #023)

Look! I'm running with such SPEED I look like I'm standing still!!!

How can a character with Hypersonic Speed, the best standard power in the game, make a “worst of” list? When said character costs over 70 points and only has one click of damage greater than 1. And then gets Perplex…that only affects speed! BARF!!! Sure, he could make Charge figures really good, but he’s spending SEVENTY POINTS to do that and little else. Hell to the no. Probably my least favorite piece of Brave and Bold, even if he’s not the worst.

______________________________________________

#9: The Burglar (Web of Spider-Man #105)

Unforgettably bad.

His hyped-up AV and damage against cheaper characters is only good against pogs and, oh, about 5 characters in Modern Age games. And they’ll all be in the backfield where he’ll never get to without concerted effort on your part. Wouldn’t you rather be, y’know, trying to win the game? Keep The Burglar locked up.

______________________________________________

#8: Ocean Master (DC 75th Anniversary #027)

He’s not a master of much of anything but sucking. His 3 range is almost worthless and his SP stands a 33% chance of both not cracking Invulnerability and causing him unavoidable damage. If he’s caught without water terrain, his Probability Control — the only reason to play him — dries up like a beached jellyfish. Give him about as wide a berth as you would that thing while on your vacation.

______________________________________________

#7: Clark Kent (The Brave and the Bold #002)

For a guy who’s secretly Superman, he’s sure sorry. Nearly 50 points for a little bit of Toughness and Perplex? Not hot. Even if he somehow survives to switch to AE Superman, he’s only got one click of Charge (so no pushing to switch) and only 3 clicks of life.

He should have Superman Ally TA at least…x-ray vision is the one power he can and does use inconspicuously as Clark Kent and it’d almost make him worth the price. As he is, though, he’s a hack.

______________________________________________

#6: Extant (The Brave and the Bold #037)

At first he looks like every generic army’s nightmare with his SP that hits them all at once. Then you realize the horrible truth.

  • It doesn’t show until his 3rd click…
  • …which you’ll never see willingly because A) he doesn’t push (both due to Quintessence and the fact that his 10 AV is then history)…
  • …and B) is likely to get hit past (thanks, no damage reduction!)
  • …and will probably miss the target anyway as he’s swinging with 8 or even 7 AV.

He’s a little hard to hit (at first) and has solid 10 range and a lot of 3 damage, yes. All that goes for pieces wayyyyy under his 169 points. Extant need not exist in your team-building plans.

Yesssss.

______________________________________________

#5: Quentin Turnbull (Jonah Hex #003)

Hard to use Mastermind when you’re only 40 points with a 14 DV. I mean, the peons are likely to have a higher DV, and yet you’re making it easier for opponents to KO them! Perplex and Outwit can be had cheaper…especially with the latter buried on click 3 of his 4-click life.

______________________________________________

#4: Knot Top Leader (Watchmen #016)

Maybe if there were, oh, I don’t know…more than ONE WHOLE OTHER FIGURE IN THE GAME that benefitted from his having the Knot Top keyword and higher cost, this waste of 37 points (which, again, you’ll only ever play because you want to use one or more copies of that one whole other figure in the game) might not be among the worst figures of the year. But there isn’t, and so he is.

I don't even have anything cute to say here.

______________________________________________

#3 Bruce Wayne (The Brave and the Bold #101)

Did I say it was hard to use Mastermind on a 40-point piece? Try 33 points! I suppose one could get some short-range Mind Control use out of him if you made sure he had some pogs to shuffle attacks off to. Otherwise, leave this playboy passed out in the hotel room where he belongs.

It's full of money...MONOPOLY MONEY.

______________________________________________

#2 Mary Jane Watson (Web of Spider-Man #030)

IF you’re playing a Spider-Man, she can be a Willpower’d wild card. That means spending a minimum of 50 extra points in Modern Age just to make her worth considering. If you want a themed team you’ll have to go up to 90 points to field Brick Spidey.

That’s not hitting the jackpot, BTW.

15 points of a pointless HeroClix figure just to say she’s been made into a figure. Let’s never do this again, OK, WizKids?

...even if it IS a fantastic figure ^ (if you catch my drift.)

______________________________________________

And Heroclixin’s number one worst HeroClix figure of 2010 is:

Spider-Man (Web of Spider-Man #100)

At first, Brick Spidey looks OK, with a neat SP and an even better trait. Then you realize that huge 4-square base ruins him utterly, making him too big a target for enemies, restricting his attack abilities via his Transporter Move And Attack, and generally offering him no benefit whatsoever. AND he dies from just 6 clicks? He’s a brick, all right…a brick of FECES!!!

Um, actually? We're STILL laughing at you.

That does it for the Top Tens of 2010. Hopefully, we’ll all be around next January to recount the most memorable ‘Clix of 2011 (and the recently revealed Magneto already looks like a lock for Heroclixin’s list, let me tell you)!

I’m going to take a short break from posts (I think) and will be back Monday with resumption of My Custom Mods series! Til then, happy clixin’!
